Editing a Book
should be followed while editing a book:-
First the Book should be scanned.
It is recommended to scan the book chapter wise, means every
chapter should be scanned and saved in a separate file
though it is not mandatory. Entire book can also be scanned
as a single file and subsequently it can be divided into
multiple files according to chapters.
Text in the book should be scanned through OCR and saved in
Sanskrit text should not be scanned because OCR does not
recognise Sanskrit language, instead it should be manually
typed using Baraha IME software.
Scanned images should be kept in a separate Image folder.
After scanning the book editing procedure begins which comprises
If the Book has been scanned as a single file, then it
should be divided into multiple files according to chapters
in the book. While doing this the original content of the
Book can also be followed.
Then each file which corresponds to a particular chapter
should be renamed and while renaming these files following
rules must be followed :-
It is recommended to change the name
of the file to the chapter name to which it corresponds, but this
name must be preceded by a hyphen, a number and an underscore.
For example : -02_Law of life.htm
In the above example “Law of life” is the chapter name.
00 and 01 are reserved for Content and Pre Content files. The
Content file contains the Content of the book and the Pre Content
file contains the images of Cover page, Acknowledgement, Back page
For that reason in the above example, numbering has been started
After renaming files each file should
be opened in Microsoft FrontPage or any html editor for editing,
which involves following procedures :-
Any blank spaces before or after
paragraphs in the entire file should be removed
Line spacing should be changed to 1.5
Font should be changed to Times New
Heading text or Titles should be in
bold letters and its font size should be 14 and should be centred on
the page. Font size of normal body text should be 12 and its
alignment should be set to “justify”.
Page numbers should be entered in the
bottom of every page. Its font size should be 10 and it should be
centered on the page.
Each page should be carefully read for
any spelling mistake and such mistakes if found, should be
If there is any broken word at the end
of a line, means if any word is broken into two lines due to lack of
space in the book, then it should be brought back into one line.
In the entire file new line characters
should be searched and replaced with a blank space.
A horizontal line should be inserted
after each page. Actually horizontal line is automatically inserted
during scanning but if it is not inserted automatically or missed
anywhere in the file, it should be inserted manually.
After editing is finished, scanned images should be inserted at
appropriate places in each file. But before inserting scanned
images in to the files they should be formatted using ACDSee or
Fireworks, which involves the following procedures :-
Resizing the image
Adjusting Brightness, Contrast,
Removing unwanted spots from the image
Then size of each edited file should be carefully checked and if
the size of any file exceeds 100 kb then that file should be
further subdivided into smaller files.
Precontent should be prepared in a new file using FrontPage.
Images of Cover page, Back page, Acknowledgement page should be
inserted at proper place while creating Precontent. This file
should be saved as -01_Precontent.htm.
Now Content of the Book should be prepared in a new file using
FrontPage and it should be saved as -00_Content.htm. While
preparing content the original content of the Book can be
followed but the first chapter should be Precontent and other
chapters should follow it. Each chapter in the Contents file
should be linked with its corresponding html file which has been
previously edited and saved.
